Your Role in the Future: Environment

Climates that Artists Can Change

Artists, creators of aesthetic things, have a crucial role to play (right now!) in ensuring that our species has a future – preferably a future worth living. A future worth living is contingent on reducing carbon emissions; most effectively by leaving coal in the ground and developing energy alternatives. To that end artists, working together, can ‘step-up’ as aesthetic communicators to collaborate with climate scientists, Indigenous leaders and scholars in the humanities and social sciences. For example: hand crafted ceramic bowls, collaboratively conceived and beautifully created for drinking fresh water with due reverence, would do very nicely circulating in the world. John Reid is an Emeritus Fellow of The Australian National University.
